Dingle Penninsula
After our beach day in Youghal we headed southwest to Killarney in County Kerry. We arrived in time to do the famous Dingle Penninsula. As we headed for this most scenic drive along some of the classic Irish countryside we made numerous stops along the way. First a side story. Tori has had a loose front tooth for some time and each day she has asked if it will come out or if we could pull it out. Well it wasn't quite ready but it was getting close. So while enjoying lunch on our Dingle drive Daddy tried to pull it out to no avail. Well it was now only holding on by a little piece. So back to the drive. Since swimming was still on the girls brains we decided to let them go for a dip at Ventry Beach. They had a blast swimming and playing in the waves. After drying off we headed along the coast to Dunbeg Fort. This stronghold was originally built in 500BC and was used to protect locals from marauding tribes and to protect their livestock. It had been used in to the middle ages. Parts of the fort have fallen pray to erosion and a section has fallen in the sea. Following that we headed around the western most tip of the European Continent. On the north side of the drive we stopped in at Gallrus Oratory. This ancient chapel dates back to the early Christian monks in the 6th Century. They used this site for daily worship and next to the oratory is a Celtic stone marking. They believe it is a monument to one of the founding monks of the oratory. It is a typical "beehive" style building built along the Irish landscape and is still waterproof to this day. The interwoven stonework was amazing to see. After the oratory we completed our journey back to Dingle and then headed to our hotel. It was an amazing afternoon.
