Stonehenge Drive-by & Swansea, Wales
Well we got up and hit the road at a decent time. So much for that idea. We hit a road closure as we started on the loop around London. Just when we thought we were back in business we got going onto an on ramp and our direction was closed. With no other choice we did the loop around London the long way. Peachy. So after some choice words for the British police and their lack of signage we eventually headed west towards Stonehenge. Our Garmin arrival time 13:30. As we approached Stonehenge we hit a little traffic but were still heading in the right direction. At the turn off to the monument the road was blocked. Again the British police. Due to the Summer Solstice last night there were 35,000 folks that were exiting. A hippie/druid fest happened so the site was closed after 12:00. Despite our best efforts we were turned away and only had a quick drive-by and no pictures to show for it. So we decided to head to Avebury (similar to Stonehenge but older and a lot larger area-wise). After finding an outlying set of boulders we stopped to stretch the legs and go up close to them. We drove into Avebury and it was apparent that it was hippie/druid fest part deux. So half a check in the block. I guess the druid gods did not want us to marvel at the ancient workings. So off to our hotel in Wales. The girls got to have some fun swimming at the hotel. Since they were satisfied and rewarded for the almost site-seeing that really wasn't, we headed to dinner. After that we walked along Victoria Quay and went to Swansea Bay to search for sea shells. The kids dipped their feet in the water and remarked how it wasn't cold. Tomorrow, the ferry from Fishguard, Wales to Wexford, Ireland.
